We are back…. well, "back"

As we all know, the Oklahoma State athletic program, and the football program in particular, has enjoyed a bit of a face-lift over the past few years. Existing facilities have been upgraded and new ones built, T. Boone has become a sort of godfather figure, Gundy has brought a ton of good and weird publicity, and the football team itself has improved to a level most of us never thought possible. We are all happy right?
Yes, we are….. but since I am an internet-complainer, I have a few more issues that I would like to see addressed.
1. Can we please ditch the flaming OSU logo once and for all.
I know we all like a little unnecessary decoration here and there (just look at the artsy orange blobs in the header image of this very blog for proof), but when it comes to a team logo, subtlety is the key. The logo needs to simply be a marker that identifies the school it is representing. A thumbnail image, so to speak, that ESPN can throw on their in-game-scoreboard to represent who is playing, and new era can place on a hat. This is not an area to get cute. And even if it were, it is definitely not an area where you want some damn flames. In fact the only places i can think of where flames have ever been acceptable are:
Kenickie’s bad-ass/gay car in Grease, and any Yngwie Malmsteen album cover.
I realize that the “Flaming OSU” (yes…that is the official name) is not the main logo but it shows up in enough places (more than zero) to matter. Can we please retire it and replace it with something more current and less gay? Like maybe a picture of Rock Hudson.
2. We need to decide on the official shorthand name for Oklahoma State
I know that locally we refer to Oklahoma State as “OSU”. This is pretty typical of how all schools are referred to by students, alumni, and people from the same state, and I have no problem with this. The problem is that on a national level the letter abbreviation is usually not recognized and, in the case of Oklahoma State, really isn’t recognized. Like it or not, nationally, “OSU” will always be associated with “Ohio State”. They have been a bigger program for a longer amount of time, and they beat us to it. We need to suck it up and move on. Another downside is, since we will never be referred to as “OSU” by anyone outside of Oklahoma, it leaves the door open for jack-ass sportscasters to shorten it to whatever they feel like. The worst example being when they just drop off the “State” and call us “Oklahoma”.
For all these reasons i think we need to decide on a better, more unique, shortened name for Oklahoma State. Some possibilities that we have been called in the past, or that i have just made up:
“O-State”, “Okie-State”, “Oak-State”, “T.Boone State”, “O-Stilly”, “Barry Sanders School”, and “Not OU”.
Personally my vote is for “Oak-State”. I know it doesn’t look great in writing but it sounds solid. Dare I say, solid like an oak. Plus, it is down to either “Oak-State” or “Okie-State” as the only real options that couldn’t possibly be mistaken for a different school, and there are still some old timers that seem to think “okie” is an insult.
Once this site is actually getting some traffic we will put up an official poll and declare the winner the official shortened name for Oklahoma State University from that moment forward. So, don’t worry about this one anymore…this is one problem that wastedoptimism is willing to step up and solve. You can just focus all your attention on problem #3.
3. Improve upon the “Cowgirls” nickname for the women’s sports teams
In all honesty I really don’t have a problem with the name “Cowgirls”. It is certainly much better than the schools that just stick a “Lady” in front of the men’s team’s nickname (“Lady Tigers” and “Lady Volunteers”…come on). The reason I am proposing a change isn’t because “Cowgirls” is bad, it’s because there is an absolutely perfect addition to the nickname that will improve it infinitely. And a possible improvement of this magnitude needs to be addressed even if the original is not broken, right?
So what is this change? It is so simple and obvious that upon reading it everyone will simultaneously acknowledge its perfection, and be pissed that they didn’t think of it themselves. All I am proposing is that we add one little word to the existing name….just one little word. One word isn’t a big deal right? Ok..enough buildup…the word i want to add is……”Reverse”. Ta-Da. That little word transforms them from boring and forgettable, into:
The Oklahoma State Reverse Cowgirls
Isn’t it beautiful? It has something doesn’t it?
Sure there might be some problems. The problem that first springs to mind is the sexual connotation. (Although, if you are thinking this would be the first time a schools nickname has referenced a sex position, well then the “Whitman College Missionaries”, the “Wichita State Shockers”, and any team called the “Bulldogs” might just disagree with you.)
The second problem could be the misogynistic undertones to this name. It sort of implies that women are merely seen as sex objects and should always be labeled as such. Well I think my proposed logo will put to rest those concerns.
So now that I have proven all the possible complaints regarding the “Reverse Cowgirls” to be completely unsubstantiated, I think we can move forward on this change. We, at wastedoptimism, vow to put all our effort behind this dream. If you, the reader, can promise to do the same our voice will be so loud they won’t be able to ignore us. We can do this Oak-State fans….we can do this…(tear).
